Savanna Running Antelope
Overview
The Karven is a medium-sized savanna grazer domesticated by halfling communities across Aletheia’s warm grasslands.
Built for endurance rather than spectacle, the Karven is a ground-running antelope species known for its strength, stability, and resilience under light rider loads. Though not a war mount, it is among the most reliable patrol animals in the savanna belts.
Physical Characteristics
Karven stand approximately 110–125 cm at the shoulder and weigh between 160–220 kg.
They are characterized by:
-
Dense musculature over compact limbs
-
A strong, level back suited to rider balance
-
Short, coarse heat-resistant coats
-
Cloven hooves adapted to dry grassland
-
Short, backward-curving horns in both sexes
Unlike leaping gazelle species, Karven are endurance runners. Their movement is low, fluid, and ground-covering, with powerful acceleration and tight turning ability.
The horns are moderate in size—functional rather than ornamental—and can be used defensively if threatened.
Temperament
Wild Karven are herd-oriented and alert. Domesticated lines have been selectively bred for:
-
Reduced panic response
-
Strong rider bonding
-
Stability under weight
-
Responsive steering through balance cues
They remain aware animals, quick to sense predators or disturbances. This awareness makes them well suited to patrol work.
Endurance and Movement
Karven are capable of:
-
Burst speeds of up to 60–70 km/h over short distances
-
Sustained patrol movement of 45–60 km per day under light loads
They tolerate heat well and require less water than horses of comparable riding function.
They are not suited to dense jungle or deep marsh terrain.
Domestication
Karven domestication is most strongly associated with savanna halfling communities, who have refined selective breeding over generations.
While humans occasionally attempt to ride Karven, the animal’s proportions and balance make them best suited to halfling riders.

Conclusion
The Karven is not bred for battle.
It is bred for endurance, awareness, and partnership.
Across the savannas, dust rising behind a low, fast-moving rider often signals not cavalry—but guardians.
