Hobgoblins are larger, stronger, and more heavily built goblinoids adapted for discipline, coordination, and sustained conflict. Where goblins rely on mobility and ambush, hobgoblins emphasize structure, planning, and controlled aggression. They are not simply larger goblins. Their societies, behavior, and capabilities differ significantly.

Hobgoblins are dangerous because they combine physical power with discipline and group coordination.

Physical Description

Hobgoblins are roughly human-sized, though typically more muscular and substantially built. Most stand between 165–180 cm, with some individuals slightly outside that range. They tend toward broad shoulders, thick thighs, deep chests, and dense musculature.

Common physical traits include:

  • broad shoulders and upper back
  • thick thighs and strong hips
  • deep chest and solid torso
  • dense, heavy musculature
  • slightly flattened nose
  • somewhat pointed ears
  • mildly pointed teeth
  • pronounced brow and jaw structure

Hobgoblins are not bulky in the sense of excess mass, but they are rarely lean. Even lightly equipped individuals tend to look powerful and grounded. Their build suggests endurance, strength, and stability rather than speed.

Their posture is upright and deliberate. Movement is efficient and controlled, with little wasted motion. Hobgoblins appear comfortable carrying weight, holding position, and advancing steadily.

Skin and Colouration

Hobgoblin skin tones fall within earthy, orange-ochre ranges similar to goblins, nearly the same as goblins.

Some groups display subtle undertones of red or bronze. These are usually faint, and hard to spot except in direct light, rather than vivid.

Hair is usually dark brown to black and commonly worn short for practicality. Facial hair is uncommon and often sparse.

Movement and Combat Style

Hobgoblins prefer structured combat supported by discipline and coordination. They are comfortable fighting in formation, holding ground, and advancing deliberately.

Common tactical tendencies include:

  • coordinated advances
  • shield and spear formations
  • controlled retreats
  • flanking maneuvers
  • disciplined ambushes
  • organized reserves

Unlike goblins, hobgoblins will often hold position even when taking losses if doing so serves a larger objective. They value cohesion over individual survival.

Hobgoblins are not especially fast, but they are difficult to push back once engaged. They favour steady pressure and controlled advances rather than sudden charges.

Psychology

Hobgoblins favour order, hierarchy, and predictability. They function best within structured groups with defined roles and expectations.

Common behavioural tendencies include:

  • acceptance of hierarchy
  • emphasis on discipline
  • preference for clear leadership
  • willingness to endure hardship
  • group-first decision making
  • controlled aggression

Hobgoblins are not inherently cruel, but they are often ruthless. Decisions are made based on effectiveness rather than empathy. Casualties are accepted if they achieve strategic goals.

Personal ambition exists but is usually expressed through advancement within a hierarchy rather than rebellion against it.

Intelligence

Hobgoblins are fully sentient and comparable to humans in reasoning ability. Their cultures emphasize organization, logistics, and coordination rather than abstract scholarship.

Hobgoblins tend to excel at:

  • group coordination
  • battlefield tactics
  • logistics and supply
  • engineering simple fortifications
  • maintaining discipline

They are less focused on:

  • artistic traditions
  • philosophical inquiry
  • theoretical scholarship

These differences are cultural tendencies rather than biological limits.

Society

Hobgoblin societies are structured and hierarchical. Leadership is usually formalized, with clear chains of authority. Roles are often defined by ability, reliability, and experience.

Groups may range from warbands to semi-permanent settlements. Even in settled conditions, organization often resembles military structure.

Hobgoblins value:

  • discipline
  • reliability
  • competence
  • obedience to leadership

Failure is typically handled through demotion, reassignment, or expulsion rather than ritual punishment. Stability matters more than spectacle.

Technology and Craft

Hobgoblins maintain more consistent equipment than goblins. Their emphasis on organization supports small-scale production, repair, and standardization.

Common features include:

  • standardized weapons within groups
  • spears and polearms
  • shields
  • medium armour where available
  • basic fortifications

Hobgoblin equipment is functional and durable rather than decorative. Uniformity is valued because it simplifies coordination.

Where resources allow, hobgoblins construct palisades, earthworks, and defensible camps.

Relations With Other Peoples

Hobgoblins are more likely than goblins to engage in organized conflict with neighbouring groups. Raids, territorial expansion, and controlled pressure are common strategies.

They may also negotiate when advantageous. Hobgoblins respect strength and competence, and agreements based on mutual benefit can hold for extended periods.

However, such arrangements remain pragmatic rather than friendly. If conditions change, hobgoblins may shift strategy quickly.

Hobgoblins and Goblins

Hobgoblins frequently make use of goblins as scouts, skirmishers, and forward elements. Goblins provide mobility and reconnaissance, while hobgoblins supply structure and force.

These relationships are rarely stable long term. Goblins tend to disperse if control weakens, while hobgoblins often view goblins as unreliable.

Despite this, the combination can be highly effective in short-term campaigns.

Hobgoblins and Grend

Some scholars believe the Grend are a distant offshoot of hobgoblins altered by long exposure to Faerie after the Cataclysm. Hobgoblins themselves do not treat them as kin, and the two rarely cooperate. When they do encounter one another, hobgoblins tend to view Grend as unpredictable and undisciplined, while Grend appear largely indifferent.
